I sketch sounds and draw rhythms as way to explore my emotions. My drawings become animations which I use to compose music. With an ever evolving palette of sounds and moving images, I perform synchronized audio/visual arrangements using custom digital instruments. Combing skills in interaction design, filmmaking, and music composition, I integrate old and new media as I work across artistic disciplines.
Loops, layers, and logic are the pillars of my creative point-of-view. “Loops” represent patterns in form and the essential structure of new media. “Layers” describes my general compositional approach and the nature of overlapping aesthetics. “Logic” is my tool for building interactive instruments and defining relationships between sound and image.
My work originates from the traditional artistic practice of mark making which I define as “the result of gesture across a surface.” This definition makes room for the inclusion of traditional modes (e.g., ink on paper) as well as emerging digital practices. As traditional practices drift into the realm of digital media, I consider how artistic activities are shaped by the sensors and algorithms that translate inputs into outputs.
Supporting my work is an interest in ontologies which I use to organize my collections of created and sampled media. From these samples I create colorful montages that feel both past and present. Saturated colors and harmonies intermix appealing to sense of wonder. Themes of hope and ascent blend with darker undertones.
